Bon Jovi is one of my all-time favorite musicians, and I’ve always admired him. The big choruses and glitzy-yet-grimy chords of the stadium rock band will always be a part of my genetic make-up, as much a part of my personality as the accent that occasionally slips out when I’m drunk or furious. But, wow, I just was emailed this video of Jon Bon Jovi singing “Wanted Dead or Alive” in Raleigh, North Carolina on April 9th, and it ain’t beautiful.
Here’s the thing: Jon Bon’s performance in this video is so off-kilter that it makes me believe there are deeper issues at hand. The fact that the cameraman pans to the band, who appear to be saying to each other, “Yo, what the fuck is going on?” leads me to believe that JBJ was off his game during this performance. There are reports that the man is losing his voice all over the Internet, but there’s losing your voice and then there’s this.
So, let’s pretend this was a unique situation that the band hadn’t anticipated. If that’s the case, the question becomes, “What happened?” Wasted? Earlier in the trip, he had his neck slit? Have you ever landed on an incorrect note and simply let it carry you for the remainder of the song? We are unsure. Watching this is a fucking disappointment, to say the least. The guy is having a hard time.
